What does it mean to Be Well?

Wellness or Health is more than the absence of disease. It is the most dynamic state of your being, expressed by being firmly established in your Self physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In Sanskrit we call this Swastha. Dynamic means that to be, and stay, healthy we must seamlessly create a new equilibrium with our environment whenever it changes. Being healthy, established in ones Self, allows you to easily adapt to all the changes you face day-to-day and moment-to-moment. It allows you to “roll with the punches”.

December 2017 is the true culmination of a year of change. This year is a “1” in numerology that marks the beginning of a new numerical cycle – a beginning, a time of change, of growth, and a relief that things are moving forward. We have been forced to take action, to step up, to make our voices heard; because the old way just won’t work anymore. A new way is being established as we deconstruct the old and move forward. It is the beginning of a new chapter—a year of initiation for a whole new 9-year cycle that will be all about independence, initiation, achievement, and creative individuality.

What’s not wrong?


Why is it that we tend start a conversation with “What’s Wrong”? Inviting each other to lament and one-up each other about how awful our day was, our life is. Inviting a conversation of negativity and depression, anger and sorrow.

How about if we ask instead, What’s Not Wrong? Inviting healthy, joyful, and positive reflections on our day. Let’s get in touch with that. Do you ever just feel “off”? Without any particular cause that you can think of, you just feel scattered and unsteady, unstable. Rhythm is essential to life: the earth circles the sun, the tides rise and fall, the heart and lungs work rhythmically, the yin and the yang, the five elements in nature, and so on and so forth. All work together to bring our inner and outer worlds together in this rhythm we call life. Prana or Chi, life force, draws the body, mind, and spirit together with the breath. BE happy: learn to Nurture Your Self

Oh, that’s it. Really?! Yep, that’s it. That’s the secret revealed in the Yoga Sutras thousands of years ago.

And, it was reinforced by Fraulein Maria during The Sound of Music in her song Favorite Things. When something bad happens, I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so bad.

The mind is a powerful thing and often times we let it control us and push us around. It is important to remember that YOU have the power! You can simply change your thoughts, change your mind, and change your attitude.

What does that mean to you: to be healed?

~ to make free from injury or disease, to make sound or whole

~ to make well again, to restore health

~ to cause an undesirable condition to be overcome

~ to patch up or correct

~ to restore to original purity or integrity

Most of us would say all of the above. I wish for myself and for you all of these things! But how do we get to this place? This place of wholeness?

As we celebrate Independence Day, be reminded that you have the freedom to choose happiness. Yes, YOU! You have the freedom to think & express your thoughts and you have the freedom to act on those thoughts, or stop at the level of thought. Because you have the ability to choose. Oftentimes, we forget this small detail.

Take a moment to ponder… be well.


What does that mean to you? Is it physical health? Mental health? Material wealth? I promise it means different things to different people. You may be thinking “oh to be rich and carefree like Paris Hilton, without a worry in the world” would be fantastic! Or you may be thinking that saving the whales and living in a tiny house is much more important. All of these things are “well”, if that is what is important to you. If it is what makes you feel fulfilled, or filled full. And there is no right or wrong answer.

I’ve studied the Yoga Sutras, embraced the Power of Now, accepted the Four Agreements, let in the Light on Life, and even eaten, prayed, & loved. Turns out, All I Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten:

“Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.”

This March the invitation is to BE balanced: Find Balance of Body & Mind.

It seems an unattainable goal; an illusion. We are all so BUSY, there is so much to do on our to-do lists. One list for work things to accomplish, one for the kids and all their schoolwork & activities, one for the home items that need to be addressed & fixed & purchased, and maybe (if you’re lucky) a list for your Self care...
